Chicago soldier killed in Iraq
25-year-old only member of his unit killed
August 10, 2005 —
A Chicago family has transformed their
front yard into a memorial to Army Specialist Miguel Carrasquillo. He
was killed in Iraq Tuesday. Carrisquillo grew up on the West Side and
was engaged to be married.
He joined the army at the age of 18. He died
at the age of 25. Two weeks ago, Miguel Carrasquillo was home. He
talked about progress in Iraq and the horrors of war. "He was a
true hero. He was dedicated. He wanted to make a difference out there.
No matter what happened out there, he wanted us to stay strong," said
Angela Martinez, soldier's sister. Strength through tears. A
tall order from a young man dedicated to the Army and dedicated to his
family. Army Specialist Miguel Carrasquillo would send money home. He
paid for his sister to attend college. He promised his fiancee a good
life together. Wednesday night, she clutched copies of his dog tags,
recalling how hard it has been to support his career. "I didn't like it, but it's his job. I support him, I support him," said Nicole Rosa, soldier's fiance.
Carrasquillo was the only member of his unit to be killed Tuesday when
their convoy got stuck in snarled traffic in downtown Baghdad. That is
when his family says a suicide bomber pulled up along the side convoy
and detonated explosives. Miguel Carrasquillo graduated from
Chicago's Lane Tech High School. While there, he was a member of the
ROTC program and always aspired to join the Army. "We would
always joke with him and say 'Why join the Army? Why would you do
that?' He would said, 'As long as I'm there I know you guys are safe
here," said Cynthia Ivin, soldier's cousin. When Miguel was home just a few weeks ago relatives say they worried "this tour of duty" would be different.
"When he left he hugged me so much and said 'Titi, pray for me. I'm
going to be on the front lines this time,' " said Luz Melendez,
soldier's aunt. During his time in Iraq, relatives say this
young soldier had been through a lot. He has killed enemy insurgents.
He watched his best friend die. And, of course, he had been away from
his family and friends here at home. Through it all, Miguel
Carrasquillo is said to have continued to believe progress is being
made in Iraq.
even tho i wasn't fond of lane, my alma mater, it is sad to have one of our own
die. it kinda does feel like family was lost. i think he
went there a couple years b4 i did, my condolences to his family. hopefully, the war ends soon.

| - Beautiful Day
EDIT: had to change my song, it truly is a beautiful day for
hawks fans. "the cold war way be over but the bulin wall is
going up in chicago", nicely put by josh mora, gotta love it, WE
FINALLY
GOT A GOALIE!, highest paid hawks player in history w/ a 4 yr./ 27 mil
contract but he is well worth it.

sox caught a break today w/ ozzie's bad managing of the pen again and
the continued suckiness of marte. and i know i pointed out about
that sucky ump brian gorman tossing buerhle in monday's game so i shall point out a good
job by an ump by the name of jeff nelson, this guy is a good ump.
the jays hit 2 of our guys in tuesday's game, unintentionally, but
nonetheless adkins hit one of their guys to protect his teammates and
both the guy who got hit and nelson understood. all nelson did
was issue a warning, which is what he should have done. unlike
that gorman ump who threw buerhle out right away, nelson knows the game
of baseball. good to see some of em know what they're doing.
JOKE OF THE DAY - CAUGHT IN THE ACT
A young girl walks in on her parents having sex. She asks, "Mom, what
are you doing to Dad?" Mom, embarrassed, replies, "I was just letting
the air out of him—he's too fat." The little girl replies, "Why?
The lady next door is just going to blow him up again."
i think i got one more post in me and then i shall depart xanga.

| - Gimme Shelter

EDIT: you can scratch aucoin off the list below cause the hawks
just signed him to a 4yr., 16 mil contract, might be a lil much but at
least the hawks finally got someone good. He was an All-Star in 2004 and finished the season
tied for 11th among league d-men with 44 points. Only two blueliners in
the league bettered his +29 plus/minus. his shot registered 102.2 mph at the 04 all-star game.
this song reminds of the good old days of the wolves...
NHL- Scott Niedermayer, Adam Foote, Sergei Gonchar, Brian Leetch, Derian Hatcher, Brian Rafalski, Mathieu Schneider, Mike Rathje, Roman Hamrlik and Adrian Aucoin
highlight a long list of available defensemen. hope the hawks get
at least one of those guys, most of which are legit #1 d-men.
also, The likes of Joe Thornton, Vincent Lecavalier, Jose Theodore, Ed Jovanovski, Wade Redden, Zdeno Chara, Sergei Samsonov, Jarome Iginla, Marty Turco, Ryan Smyth, Patrick Elias, Evgeni Nabokov, Chris Pronger and Patrick Marleau
could all be available to the highest bidder next summer if they don't
sign long-term deals in the interim - a younger and more talented group
than this year's list. Those are some pretty darn good players in there. iginla would look good in a hawks sweater.
MLB- *brian gorman is a very inept umpire, he tossed buerhle for protecting
his teammates after iguchi(waist) and aj(elbow) got hit by the
o's. he also cost buerhle his streak of pitching 6+ innings in a
game, which ended at 49. this guy does not understand
baseball. he's been umpiring for 13 years and i've been watching
baseball less time than that and i know what's going on. even
surhoff, who got hit by buerhle, he's a veteran player, he took it like
a man and took his walk to first because he knew buerhle had to protect
his teammates. and gorman went ahead and threw him out. i'm
sick of these umpires making the game about themselves. they
should realize that ppl don't come to watch them umpire, they come to
watch pitchers pitch and hitters hit. hawk said it best, "very
inept call by possibly an inept umpire" except i'd take out
possibly. the sox should really file a complaint. every
team hits us but then we can't hit them cause of those stupid
warnings.
*looks like raffy won't be going to the hof. if he did knowingly
take steroids, then he's not very bright takin em the same year w/
stricter drug poilicies and he was gonna get his 3000th hit.

sox won again, contreras pitched decent, kept us in the game. pen
did the job. aj got a clutch hr. "just when you think you
need another hitter, go get yourself another pitcher", heard it on the
radio recently, makes sense.
hawks drafted a winger w/ their 1st pick, jack skille, who will be
playing @ UofW-Madison. i appreciated the fact that comcast
showed the whole draft, while sucky espn didn't. hopefully,
comcast picks up the nhl, they do a better job w/ sports it
seems. i kept waiting to see who atl would pick but they traded
down w/ the sharks and then the rangers and by that time the sox game
had started. i know the panthers traded up from 29 to 20, bad
luck for them to get such a bad pick. sucks that santala's option
was not picked up by atl. also sucks that the hawks made an offer
to thibault, even tho he sucks and is injured a lot and he didn't play
anywhere last year, and they did NOT make an offer to berard, who
basically scored more points than most of the forwards on the
team. hopefully, they're trying to sign berard @ lower price,
hopefully.

| - You
Overrated

well the best team in baseball is currently not doin too well, doesn't
help when the guy in charge keeps makin the same in-game pitching
managing mistakes. overusing the pen unnecessarily is a no-no
that he still does not comprehend. hopefully, this is just
a rut for the team w. their defense. and i do agree w/ ozzie on
the fact that now that we are the best team, we have a bullseye on our
backs, and every team is gonna bring their a-game against us, which
will make it that much tougher. i hope kenny picks us up another
solid bullpen arm, but not baez or mesa or a similar guy. i
hope he only makes a deal that makes our team better and not just for
the sake of trading.
the hawks are playin on my b-day against the jackets @ home so i'll
prolly be there, it'd be cool if forsberg was wearing a hawks sweater
at that time, but with $ bill running the show, that prolly won't
happen.
